Film Development
The first thing we did was learn about the different parts of the film cameras. When looking into the camera there is a little needle that is in between a plus or a minus. To find the right levels of light to take the perfect photo, a light meter can be used. When placing the light meter in front of the camera and having the light fall directly onto the lumisphere it will measure the light levels. When you press the meter button, the results can be read, and the shutter speed and aperture set to match. Now the camera can be accurately set.
My class and I walked around Downpatrick and took photos of different things we found interesting. The photos are going to be shot using black and white film reel. So, we needed to get photos that show textures with different patterns and shadows. We walked around the main street, up the cathedral and around the Mound of Down. We could only take a total of 24 photos as that was the number of photos on the reel.
To process the film, we needed to open the film in darkness by prying off the film with a pair of scissors. I removed the can and popped off the lid. I then loaded the film into the reel/ spool and move it passed the ball bearing. If the film has any uneven edges, then cut it straight with a pair of scissors so it can be loaded into the spool easier. To load the reel twist, it in a back-and-forth motion, make sure it is loaded into the side with ramp like edges. Next place the reel in a tank and put the funnel lid on top then turn it until it locks in place. The lights can now be turned on because no light can get into the can and corrupt the film.
Chemicals now need to be added into the funnel lid with 60ml of developer and 240ml of water. Press the lid down so it is sealed shut; then open it slightly to let the air out and close it to create a vacuum. Gently shake the container for 13 minutes to make sure the film develops properly. Once the 13 minutes is over pour the contents down the sink. Next add 15ml of soap bath and 275ml of water into the funnel lid and again close the lid and open it gently then shut it to create a vacuum. Mix the mixture gently for 3 minutes then pour it out down the sink. Finally, add 60ml of fixer solution and 240ml of water to the funnel lid and create a vacuum seal again; and mix gently for 5 mins and pour out the solution.
Add a clip to the end of the spiral of film then pull the spiral out of the reel. Remove any excess solution with your fingers, then hang the film in a plastic cabinet for 4 hours so the film can develop.
