Oscar-Claude Monet was born 14 November 1840 –and died 5 December 1926. He was a French painter, a founder of french term painting. The term "Impressionism" is derived from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant (which means Impression, Sunrise), which was shown in 1874 in the first of the independent exhibitions mounted by Monet and his associates as an alternative to the Salon de Paris. Monet's ambition of documenting the French countryside led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. From 1883, Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. He began painting the water lilies in 1899, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life.
The reason I chose the two painting to display above is because they really call to me. The painting of the Japanese Bridge is life like and sereen that it really draws attention to it. Monet uses bold, bright nd contrasting colours to create this piece (the bright green of the leaves and the contrasting burdandy in the water and bushes). The painting looks edenic and surreal almost as if I was there in the painting. The bridge is the most eye catching piece in the whole painting. Monet used bles, purples and whites to add tones, shadow and contrast to the bridge. While the rest of rthe painting uses bright greens and yellows the bridge is darker tonned making it stand out more.
I also chose the painting of the catherdal. I really enjoy looking at this piece because it too has great contrasting colours (the yellow and light brown colours for the sky and water and the green and brown hues for the shadowy cathedral). I can imagine Monet painting this on a balcony looking over the water at sunrise and painting this calm and tranquil piece.
