I have become very interested in mushrooms, toadstools and fungi. There is no real difference between mushrooms, and the terms can sometimes be used interchangeably to refer to the same types of fungus. However, in common, the non scientific wage, the term toadstool is more often given to those fungi that are poisonous or otherwise inedible.
Mushrooms refer to a fungal growth which takes the form of a domed cap on a stalk with gills on the underside of the cap, while toadstools refer to the spore bearing fruitful bodies of fungi in the form of a rounded cap on a stalk. Mushrooms with white gills are often poisonous. So are those with a ring around the stem and those with a volva. In mycology, a volva is the cup like structure at the base of the mushroom. Because the vulva is often underground its important to dig around the base of the mushroom to look for it. Mushrooms with a red colour on the cap or stem are also either poisonous or strongly hallucinogenic.

Looking and researching these mushrooms have given me ideas for my final piece and I will look at other artists that can inspire my future work.

When I was surfing the web to find artists to look at Marisaembroidery's work really caught my eye. This artist uses a range of threads and embroidery styles to make her art work. I love how she used a creamy-beige fabric to sew into. I believe it really compliments the earthy tones used to sew the mushroom caps. I hope to use her methods as inspiration for my final piece. She incorperates fine art into her work by creating detailed embrodied mushrooms and other scenes inspired by nature. I would like to bring this into my final piece. |
Jasmin Charlotte is a new Zealander who lives in London. She uses water colour paints on fabric to lay the base for her embroidery patterns. I really enjoy studying her art work as it has a nice colour flow. Her colour palette is very faint and pastel and her embroidery methods are simple with little detail. I will take her work as inspiration for my samples and final piece. She uses a combination of watercolours and embroidery which shows how she uses fine art within her textile work.

Adam Long is a professional sculptor. He has been art educator for fifteen years, working in public middle and high schools as well as at the university level. I find his work fun and appealing to the eye. As a textile sculptor he uses different types of textiles and media for his art would and I would like to do the same in my samples. I believe that the stems used for the hair bring this piece closer to nature and more appealing to the eye. He uses brings fine art into his textile work by creating scupltures using paper/ newspaper and leaves
