Édouard Manet was born 23 January 1832 and died 30 April 1883. He was a French modernist painter and was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, and a pivotal figure in the movement of Realism to Impressionism. Manet was born into an upper-class household with strong political connections, Manet rejected the future originally envisioned for him, and became engrossed in the world of painting. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass (Le déjeuner sur l'herbe) and Olympia, both 1863, caused great controversy and helped to inspire the young painters who would create Impressionism. Today, these are considered watershed paintings that mark the start of modern art. The last 20 years of Manet's life saw him form bonds with other great artists of the time, and develop his own style that would be heralded as innovative and serve as a major influence for future painters.
I have chosen three of Manets paintings that I like the most. I really love the first one. The woman is staring off into the distance. She looks alone and isolated even though she has loads of money seen by the jewelry adorned onto her gown. I love how simple and realistic this painting is. Manet uses a darker colour palette to show the shadows and features around the room. The woman is wearing black and lightish blue probably tio symbolise her wealth or grief. We know that Manet was brought up in an upper middle class home so he could easily see the women of high society.
I chose the painting of the mother and the son staring at the boats next. I love the textured look of nte water and the reflection of the boats Manet painted. To menit looks like a family date trip or a picnic outing on a boat. Manet uses bright and bold colours and tones with less shadon in this piece (probably because it was a very bright day and this is a painting that brought manet happiness).
